NEMA ASSISTS 149 AFFECTED TRADERS IN NGURU MARKET YOBE STATE

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has responded to the recent fire disaster in Nguru Central Market, Yobe State with delivery of relief items to assist 149 affected traders in the rebuilding of their burnt shops.

Director General of NEMA Engr Mustapha Maihaja said the items would be distributed directly to affected victims by the team of the  agency together with market committee  members.

He sympathized with the traders on behalf of the Federal Government. He said the items were provided as palliative measures.

Engr. Maihaja also inspected the damages in the burnt market after which he emphasized the need for more caution against fire disaster especially during this dry season.

The items delivered include 1200 bags of cement, 732 bundles of roofing sheets, 300 bags of roofing nails, 1485 ceiling boards and 3000 piece of planks.

It will recall that the following the market fire incident that occured on Saturday 11th November 2017, a team of NEMA staff were deployed same day in assessing the damages for the relief intervention.

DG NEMA APPEALS FOR AMENDEMENT OF THE AGENCY’S ACT

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Engr.  Mustapha Maihaja has appealed to the National Assembly to pass the Bill seeking to amend the establishment of the Agency to improve on the working condition of the staff and disaster management in the country.

He made the appeal at the National Assembly when he led the management staff of the agency before the House of Representatives' Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness in Abuja. The meeting was at the instance of the Committee, which had invited the NEMA management and its staff union leaders to resolve the recent industrial disputes that resulted in a one day strike action by the staff last week.

Engr. Maihaja told the committee that the misunderstanding had been resolved and that it was not the wish of the management to allow such matters to degenerate into strike action, adding that some of the issues in the disputes could be properly handled with the amendment to the NEMA establishment Act.

He appreciated the concerns of the Committee and thanked the Minister of Labour Dr. Chris Ngige for intervening in resolving the issues.

NEMA RESOLVED LABOUR RELATED ISSUES WITH ITS MEMBERS OF STAFF

The industrial dispute between the management and staff of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have been resolved yesterday, Thursday, 19th October, 2017.

The disputes which resulted in the closure of the NEMA offices  nationwide was resolved immediately following a meeting convened by the Minister of Labour and Productivity,  Dr Chris Ngige in Abuja with the NEMA Management led by Director General, Engr.  Mustapha Maihaja and representatives of the  national body of the Labour Union
represented by the National President of Trade Union Congress, Secretary General of the Association of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, FCT leaders of NLC and Nigeria Civil Service Union.

Among the issues discussed were matters relating to the staff welfare and other  areas of misunderstanding which were fully resolved with timeline for implementation to be closely monitored by the Hon Minister of labour and productivity.

At the end of the tripartite meeting, a joint  settlement agreement was signed by both parties with the Permanent Secretary Federal  Ministry of Labour as witness. With these developments, the offices of NEMA hitherto closed are expected to reopen for normal operation nationwide Friday, 20th October, 2017.

It will be called that staff of the agency embarked  on a three days warning strike on  Thursday  19th October 2017.

Following the alert, the Agency has immediately established contact with the State Commissioner for Environment, State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant stakeholders while a team from the agency are due to arrive the state for appropriate action to the affected persons and communities. 

NEMA strongly advises the communities living around the flood Plains to immediately relocate to higher grounds for safety to avoid the danger of the eminent flood.

NEMA DEPLOYS HUMANITARIAN TEAM TO ASSIST FLOOD VICTIMS IN  BENUE STATE

The National Emergency Management Agency has deployed a humanitarian team to Benue state to support persons affected by the recent flood that devastated large part of the state.

Director General of NEMA Engr. Mustapha Maihaja said that following the directive of  President Muhammadu Buhari, a reinforcement of another contingent of humanitarian officers headed by Director (Search and Rescue), Air Commodore Paul Ohemu from the Headquarters in Abuja has been despatched to the State, in addition to the officers of the North Central Zonal Office in Jos, to deliver immediate humanitarian assistance to the affected persons in the various locations and assess the situation for further supports. As an emergency response, seven (7) 30 tons truck has been despatched to the state and are due to arrive Makurdi on Friday, 1st September, 2017.

He also sympathized with the affected people and assured that NEMA would work closely with the Benue State Government  in providing them with the necessary succour.

DISTRIBUTION UPDATE: 374 THOUSAND IDPS ENUMERATED IN BORNO, YOBE AND ADAMAWA STATES

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has so far enumerated and validated 373,479 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) representing 63,966 households in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states, under the Federal Government Emergency Food Intervention of 40,000 Metric Tonnes of Grains, currently going on in the North East; this was contained in a situation report update released this week.

NEMA in partnership with the State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), Volunteers and some IDPs in the past one-month have been enumerating and distributing food items to the affected persons at their doorsteps.

A total of 144,406 IDPs representing 24,068 households have so far been enumerated in Yobe State, in Adamawa a total of 17,892 IDPs representing 4,656 households have also been enumerated while 211,451 representing 35,242 households have so far been enumerated in Borno state as the exercise is still on-going.

The foods distributions, which started in Borno, have so far reached 18,000 households in Teachers Village, Bakassi, Dalori II, Magcolis and Goni Kachalari IDP camps while the distribution is still on going in CAN EYN and Farm Centre IDP camps.  The enumeration in Bauchi, Gombe and Taraba states is starting this week according to the report. 

The report stressed  “one of the critical aspects of the intervention was to identify and confirm the number of displaced persons in various states in the North East for effective planning and the need to verify same to ensure effectiveness of the programmes”.

Since the commencement of the exercise, no loss or diversion of food items have been recorded. An unprecedented delivery success rate have been achieved says the report.

The report also identified some challenges in the exercise as delays in the conversion of maize to masavita and masaflour for the convenience of the IDPs, acquiring of new warehouses and the rainy season, which affected the smooth distribution of food items.

It will recall that His Excellency, the Acting President on June 8, 2017 flagged off the food distribution project in Maiduguri, Borno state, and the event marked the introduction of the Door-to-Door food distribution system in the management of IDPs in Nigeria.

Mambilla crisis: NEMA distributes relief assistance to affected persons

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed relief assistance to persons affected by the recent crisis between the Mambilla ethnic groups and Fulani of the area in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Flagging off the relief distribution in Mbamnga, a mountain top community in the local government area, the Director Search and Rescue of NEMA, Air Commodore Sonny Paul Ohemu said the items were distributed to ameliorate the plights of the affected persons.

He said that the distribution was in compliance with the directive of the Acting President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, as NEMA carried out a rapid assessment by identifying the immediate needs and locations of the displaced persons in providing them with the relief assistance.

Air Commodore Ohemu who led the NEMA team on the relief distribution to many centres and locations, was also at the Palace of the Tabon Mambilla Dr Shehu Bajo where he presented the assistance for the displaced persons living there and urged the royal father to promote dialogue among the communities to forestall reoccurrence of the crisis. He urged the people to live together in peace and eschew violence.

Responding, the Tabon Mambilla Dr Bajo appreciated the Federal Government for the prompt response in the delivery of the relief assistance and the deployment of security operatives in quelling the crisis and restoring peace to the area. 

Also  speaking, the Sarkin Fulani of Mambilla Plateau Alhaji Saidu Bawa thanked the Federal Government for the relief assistance through NEMA and requested for more supports for the reconstruction of houses that were destroyed as well as measures for restoration of permanent peace in the area. He said about 12,421 persons of Fulani extraction that are indigenes of the Local Government were displaced by the crisis, adding that some of them have even crossed over the border into the neighbouring Republic of Cameroon where they are now taking refuge. 

The Mbamnga Fulani community leader Ardo Ibrahim Jibo who received the relief items delivered to the town on behalf of his people also appreciated the NEMA Director Air Commodore Ohemu and his team for the efforts made in conveying the items to the community through the difficult mountainous terrains and crossing rivers.


The relief materials delivered by NEMA consisted of 33 assorted food and non-food items that include bags of rice, millets, cloths, blankets, mattresses, cooking materials, children wears, dignity kits for lactating mothers and detergents among others.

Mambilla Crisis: FG Pledges Commitment To Addressing Plight of Victims

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has assured victims of the recent attacks on the Mambilla Plateau of Taraba of Federal Government’s intervention to ameliorate their plight.

Director General of NEMA Engr Mustapha Yunusa Maihaja gave the assurance during an assessment visit to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Gembu and Nguroje in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba. 

The Director General of NEMA who was represented by the Director of Search and Rescue Air Commodore Sonny Paul Ohemu told the IDPs that the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, was deeply worried about the attacks. 

He convey the sympathy of Federal Government to those affected by the crisis and advised the communities to remain calm adding that they should desist from further destruction of lives and property.

He explained that the Acting President had sent the team to carry out on the spot assessment of the situation with a view to supplying some relief materials to meet the needs of the IDPs. The assessment, according to him would include visit some of affected areas to ascertain the extent of the damages. 

The NEMA team paid a courtesy visit to the Paramount Ruler of the Mambilla Plateau, Dr Shehu Baju, who appreciated the prompt intervention of security agencies in bringing the situation under control and the families that are hosting some of the IDPs .

He urged the paramount ruler to impress it on district and village heads to ensure that peace was maintained in their respective domains.

Responding, Baju thanked the Acting President for responding promptly to the attacks by deploying security agencies to arrest the situation, as well dispatching NEMA to assess its impact.

Chairman of the Local Government Mr John Yep who also spoke in Palace of the Chief of Mambilla said that several persons were displaced and in dire need of assistance as the materials provided by the state government may not cater for the people for long.

Ardo Zubairu Gaji, leader of the displaced persons taking refuge at the Goverment Day Secondary, Gembu, also appreciated the Federal Government for sending the team to assist them. He said the coming of NEMA would be a serious relief to the victims. 

Scores of people were killed and their properties worth millions of naira destroyed following the communal crisis that erupted between the Mambilla and Fulani Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Engr. Mustapha Maihaja has said a total of 200 trucks out of 1,032of assorted relief intervention by the Federal Government have so far been conveyed to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe States. He stated this when he inspected the facilities of the three milling companies in Kano.


He said the Agency has taken effective measures to ensure that trailers conveying relief items to the north east were not diverted by installing tracker to monitor the movement and  armed police escorts till they reach to their final destination.

NEMA Commences Door-Door Distribution of Emergency Relief to IDP
 
The National Emergency Management Agency has commenced door-to-door distribution of 30,000 metric tonnes of emergency food intervention with Bakassi IDPs Camp in Maiduguri Borno state.
 
The Director General of NEMA, Engr. Mustapha Maihaja said the agency under his watch is determined to bring sanity to humanitarian intervention by adopting door to door distribution in order to serve the affected persons in dignity without subjecting them to avoidable stress of having to stand in long queues under the sun or rain.
 
He made the statement during a meeting held with UNOCHA officials in Maiduguri, Borno state.
 
He said the relief distribution, which was going to be a quarterly, would entail the distribution of Millet,Sorghum,Bean, Rice, Soya beans, and Maize  to IDPs in the camps and those in host communities in Borno, Yobe Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe and Bauch states.
 
The DG who sought the assistance of UN humanitarian organizations said “ we will like to share with you what we have in this project, and where we want humanitarian actors here in the North east to collaborate with us, so that this program would be a success”. 
 
Some of the beneficiaries at Bakassi IDP camp who were interviewed expressed their happiness and thanked the federal Government for bring sufficient foods to their doorsteps and appealed for continuation.
